July is just around the corner (weird i know) and there are several films that just cannot be missed. Just in case you’re running short on the cash this month, here’s my guide to your best bets.
1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 11)
I know all the hype is generated towards Transformers, but this is freakin Harry Potter! Not only do we know from the previous films that this will be entertaining, but the trailer alone looks better than the first four installments. It’s dark, it’s action-packed, and it’s my favorite book from the series. Even for the people who have sadly missed out on the books, the H.P. films are great on their own, and this one will not be any different. After the poor showings from the big May movies, this could easily be my favorite movie of the summer. Don’t miss it! No exceptions!
2. Transformers (July 3)
More than meets the eye! I don’t care if the plot sucks, well actually I do, but the action is this mega blockbuster should be enough to steal even John McClane’s breath. Robots in the desert, robots on the interstate, robots on city skyscrapers. This movie will blow your socks off. Directed by Michael Bay, Mr. Blow Crap Up, built with Jerry Bruckheimer’s money, and guided by Spielberg himself, this movie will easily land in the top 5 box office of 2007. Make sure you see this film along with the rest of the world.
3. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (July 20)
Adam Sandler is getting old. Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are now more than 10 years old and new faces have taken over in the world of comedy (see the frat pack (stiller, wilson, vaughn) and the judd apatow gang). But this age old story has finally reached the screen with the cast it deserves, Sandler included. Kevin James proved his ability in Hitch and looks to be a great wife to Sandler’s husband in Chuck and Larry’s fake gay couple. And Jessica Biel ain’t bad to look at either.
4. Hairspray (July 20)
HUGE cast, ranging from John Travolta as a woman to Christopher Walken and his amazing dance skills (Weapon of Choice anyone?). It looks like the right broadway-to-film project based on it’s trailer, but will it hold for a whole 2 hours? My prediction is that Hairspray will not walk away from the box office with a pocket of cash, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be any good. I believe it’s worth a watch, especially if you enjoyed the likes of Chicago and Rent.
5. License to Wed (July 3)
The Office is easily one of the funniest shows on television. And while Steve Carrell is the workhorse, the show wouldn’t be the same without John Krasinski. After several small roles in films like The Holiday and Dreamgirls, Krasinski’s got his first big boy role. Robin Williams and Mandy Moore also star.
The Rest:
The Simpsons – July 27 ; Sunshine – July 20 ; No Reservations – July 27
And if you get the chance, DO NOT MISS Rescue Dawn. I would have in it the top 5, but there’s no telling how wide it will open. But if you get the chance to see it, don’t hesitate.
